Discord Messages on Google: What's Changing and How to Turn It Off

Discord public server messages will appear in Google search from mid-December 2026. Learn what's changing, who's affected, and how to turn it off now.

Key takeaways

  • Starting November 16, 2026, Discord's 63,000+ Discoverable Servers (public servers with 1,000+ members) will have Server Web Pages that may appear in web search engines.
  • From mid-December 2026, some messages from public channels in Discoverable Servers may show in Google search results, though usernames and avatars won't be shown alongside messages.
  • Messages sent before mid-December 2026 won't be shown. Only messages sent after that date, in public channels of Discoverable Servers, may appear on the web.
  • To opt out, go to User Settings > Data and Privacy and turn off the Channel Messages setting. One setting covers all Discoverable Servers. Messages sent while it was on stay up unless you delete them.

Your Discord messages in big public servers may soon show up in Google search results. Starting in mid-December 2026, Discord is rolling out a change that will let search engines index some messages from public channels.

Here's what's changing, who's affected, and how to turn it off before your messages go live on the web.

What Discord is changing

On October 27, 2026, Discord announced that Discoverable Servers will have their content made easier to discover on the web (Discord blog, Oct. 27, 2026).

Discoverable Servers are the most public spaces on Discord. They're public servers with at least 1,000 members, at least eight weeks old, and meeting Discord's activity and safety requirements. More than 63,000 Discoverable Servers exist as of October 2026.

Two rollouts: Server Web Pages on Nov 16, messages in search from mid-December

Starting November 16, 2026, all Discoverable Servers will have a Server Web Page, a default page built from the server's Server Profile if admins haven't made one. These pages may display Channel Summaries, which are automated summaries of discussions in public channels.

Starting in mid-December 2026, some messages from public channels may appear on Server Web Pages and in web search engines like Google. The rollout will be gradual. Messages will appear "in their own words," but usernames and avatars won't be shown alongside messages.

Channels where content may appear on the web will be labeled in Discord.

What will and won't be indexed

What may appear:

  • Messages from public channels in Discoverable Servers
  • Messages sent after mid-December 2026 (when the rollout begins)
  • Automated Channel Summaries on Server Web Pages

What won't appear:

  • Messages sent before mid-December 2026
  • Messages from private servers, DMs, or group DMs
  • Usernames and avatars alongside messages
  • Messages from members who turn off the Channel Messages setting before they post

Who's affected

You're affected if:

  • You're a member of a Discoverable Server (a public server with 1,000+ members)
  • You post in public channels on that server
  • You're not in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, or South Korea (where the setting is off by default)
  • You're not a teen account (also excluded)

Discord's pilot included servers for NBA 2K, Rust, and Dead by Daylight communities, where admin and moderator posts were shown (Discord blog, Oct. 27, 2026).

You're not affected if:

  • You only use private servers (servers that aren't Discoverable)
  • You only use DMs or group DMs
  • You're in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, or South Korea, where the setting is off by default
  • You're under 18 and have a teen account

How to turn off Discord messages in search (step by step)

To prevent your new messages from appearing in web search, turn off the setting before mid-December 2026.

  1. Open Discord (desktop or mobile).
  2. Go to User Settings (the gear icon next to your username).
  3. Click Data and Privacy.
  4. Find the Channel Messages setting (the exact in-app label may vary).
  5. Turn it off.

One setting covers Channel Messages in every Discoverable Server. You don't have to turn it off for each server separately.

What happens to messages already sent

Messages sent while the setting was on will stay up unless you delete them from Discord (Discord blog, Oct. 27, 2026).

If you turn the setting off today, any messages you sent in public channels before turning it off may still appear in search once the rollout begins in mid-December. To remove those, you'll need to delete them manually in Discord before mid-December.

What admins can do

Server admins have their own controls. They can:

  • Go to Server Settings > Web Presence.
  • Choose which channels appear on the web, or opt all channels out.
  • If nothing changes, public channels stay on by default.
  • Turn off Channel Summaries (automated discussion summaries) for their server.

A server that doesn't want a Server Web Page at all has to switch back to a Community Server (Discord blog, Oct. 27, 2026).

Both the member setting (your Channel Messages toggle) and the admin settings are on by default for admins. Turning a feature off stops new content going forward, but already-published content may remain until removed (Discord Help Center, Oct. 27, 2026).

Why this matters for privacy

The change means that a message you type in a big public Discord server could show up in a Google search weeks or months later, even though your username won't be attached to it.

Public chats are a privacy risk

A public message can reveal more than you think. It can include:

  • Where you work
  • What city or neighborhood you're in
  • Your schedule (when you're home, when you're traveling)
  • Your username or handle on other platforms
  • References to people in your life

When someone combines those clues with people-search and data broker listings, it's easier to find you in the real world.

Discord's policy makes this risk bigger. Before, someone had to join a server and scroll through channels to find a message you posted. Now, they can search Google.

Channel Summaries won't respect your opt-out

Even if you turn off the Channel Messages setting, Channel Summaries (automated summaries of public channel discussions) will still appear on Server Web Pages unless the server admin turns them off (The Next Web, Oct. 28, 2026).

You cannot opt out of Channel Summaries as a user. Only admins can.

Search engines have their own timelines

Even after Discord removes a message or you delete it, search engines have their own caching and indexing systems. It may take extra time or action for content to stop appearing in search results (Discord Help Center, Oct. 27, 2026).

If a message was indexed by Google before you deleted it, the cached copy may stay in search results for days or weeks. You may need to request removal from Google directly.

Practical steps you can take now

Here's what to do before mid-December 2026:

1. Turn off the setting before mid-December

Go to User Settings > Data and Privacy and turn off the Channel Messages setting. Do it before mid-December so new messages aren't indexed.

2. Review what you've posted in public servers

Think about the big public Discord servers you're in. Have you posted messages that mention:

  • Your city, neighborhood, or workplace
  • Your schedule or travel plans
  • Your real name, email, or username on other platforms
  • Family members, roommates, or friends

Find those messages and delete them before mid-December. Once the rollout starts, even deleted messages may have already been indexed by search engines.

3. Be cautious about what you post in public channels going forward

Even with the setting off, Channel Summaries may still reference topics you discussed. If you want a conversation to stay private, use a private server, a DM, or a different platform entirely.

4. Check what personal details about you are already listed online

If someone searches for your name, what do they find? Are your home address, phone number, or email listed on people-search sites or data broker sites?

Removing those listings makes it harder for someone to connect a Discord message (even without a username) to your real identity. Our guide on how to remove your personal information from the internet walks through the full process.

What about AI scraping and other concerns?

When Discord announced the change, some users expressed worries about AI scraping, according to TechCrunch's coverage reported by The Next Web (The Next Web, Oct. 28, 2026).

Discord's announcement did not address AI training or data sales. The blog post focused on making Discoverable Server content easier to discover on the web and in search engines.

What we know from Discord's announcement:

  • Messages may appear in web search and on Server Web Pages.
  • Usernames and avatars won't be shown alongside messages.
  • Discord did not state that it sells messages or trains AI models on them.

If a message is indexed by Google, it's part of the public web. What happens to that data after that, whether Google or other companies use it for AI training or other purposes, is outside Discord's control.

Regional differences: EU, UK, Canada, and others

In the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, the Channel Messages setting is off by default given legal restrictions (Discord blog, Oct. 27, 2026).

If you're in one of those regions, your messages won't appear in search unless you turn the setting on.

Teen accounts (accounts for users under 18) are excluded everywhere.

Everywhere else, the setting is on by default. If you're in the US, for example, you need to turn it off manually.

What happens after December 16

The rollout is gradual, so not every Discoverable Server will have messages indexed on day one. But once the feature is live, messages from public channels may start appearing in search results over the following weeks and months.

Discord has said that channels where content may appear on the web will be labeled (Discord blog, Oct. 27, 2026). Check for those labels in the servers you're in.

If you see a message of yours appear in search results after the rollout, and you've since deleted it or turned off the setting, you can request removal from the search engine. For Google, use the Remove outdated content tool.

The bigger picture: social platforms and search indexing

Discord is not the first platform to make user-generated content searchable. Reddit posts have appeared in Google search for years, and Reddit has deals with Google to make its content more prominent in search results.

The difference with Discord is that many users thought of Discord as a more private, closed-off space compared to Reddit or Twitter. Public servers existed, but the content didn't show up in Google searches unless someone explicitly posted a link.

That assumption is changing. If you post in a public channel on a Discoverable Server after mid-December 2026, treat it the same way you'd treat a public Reddit comment or a public tweet: it may show up in search results, and it may be seen by people who never joined the server.

Conclusion

Starting November 16, 2026, Discord Discoverable Servers will have Server Web Pages. From mid-December 2026, some messages from public channels in those servers may appear in web search engines like Google.

Your username won't be shown alongside your messages, but the message text itself may be indexed and searchable. Messages sent before mid-December won't be included.

To opt out:

  1. Go to User Settings > Data and Privacy in Discord.
  2. Turn off the Channel Messages setting before mid-December 2026.
  3. Review and delete any past messages in public channels that you don't want indexed.
  4. Don't post location, workplace, or schedule details in public channels.
  5. Check what personal information about you is listed on data broker and people-search sites, and remove it.

The setting is off by default in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. Teen accounts are excluded. Everywhere else, it's on unless you turn it off.

UndoLeak erases your data from data brokers and keeps it off. If you want to see what personal information about you is already listed online, run a free scan.

Server Web Pages will go live on November 16, 2026. Some messages from public channels may start appearing in web search beginning in mid-December 2026. The rollout will be gradual.

Will my username show up next to my Discord messages in search results?

No. Discord has stated that usernames and avatars won't be shown alongside messages. Messages will appear in their own words, but without attribution to specific users.

How do I turn off Discord messages appearing in Google search?

Go to User Settings > Data and Privacy in Discord and find the Channel Messages setting. One setting covers Channel Messages in every Discoverable Server. Turn it off before mid-December 2026 to prevent new messages from being indexed.

Will old Discord messages (from before mid-December 2026) show up in search?

No. According to Discord's announcement, messages sent before mid-December 2026 won't be shown in search results.

Can I opt out if I'm in the EU, UK, Canada, or other regions?

In the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, the Channel Messages setting is off by default given legal restrictions. Teen accounts are also excluded. Everywhere else, the setting is on by default unless members turn it off.

What are Server Web Pages and Channel Summaries?

Server Web Pages are default pages created from a server's Server Profile (unless admins make a custom page). They may display Channel Summaries, which are automated summaries of discussions in public channels. Channel Summaries still appear on Server Web Pages unless admins turn them off, even if you opt out of having your messages shown.

Can server admins control which channels appear on the web?

Yes. Admins can go to Server Settings > Web Presence and choose which channels appear on the web, or opt all channels out. If nothing changes, public channels stay on by default. Channels where content may appear on the web will be labeled in Discord. A server that doesn't want a web page at all has to switch back to a Community Server.
