California DROP checklist

DROP sends one free deletion request to 600+ registered data brokers. This checklist helps you file it well, so brokers can actually match your records, and reminds you when to update it.

1Can you use DROP?

Do you live in California right now?

2Gather what brokers match on

Brokers match your request against their files, which are often years out of date. Add the details they might have. This list stays in your browser.

Saved in this browser only, so you can come back to it.

4Set your 45-day reminders

Brokers re-check DROP every 45 days, and you can update your profile once every 45 days. Add the reminders to your calendar so you review statuses and add anything missing.

What DROP does

DROP, the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, was created by California's Delete Act and is run by CalPrivacy. One free request goes to every registered data broker, more than 600 of them. Brokers had to start processing requests on August 1, 2026, can take up to 90 days to report back, and must check DROP again every 45 days.

Reading your statuses

  • Pending: the broker hasn't processed your request yet.
  • Deleted: the broker matched you and deleted your data, unless an exemption applies.
  • Opted-out: the broker couldn't make an exact match. It can no longer sell or share your data. Add the old address or number it might know you by at your next update.

What DROP doesn't cover

DROP doesn't touch Google results (Google guide), public records at the source, or sites that aren't registered brokers. Check the big people-search sites directly with our people-search check.

Once every 45 days. That is why the checklist sets a reminder every 45 days.

Does this checklist send my details anywhere?

No. Everything you type stays in your browser. The calendar file is created on your device.

What if I don't live in California?

DROP is only for California residents. Use the site-by-site opt-outs in our removal guides, or send requests with the opt-out letter generator.
