When a letter helps

Most people-search sites have an online opt-out form, and the form is usually the fastest route. A written request is useful when:

  • a company has no form, or the form keeps failing,
  • you want a record of exactly what you asked for and when,
  • you're asking a marketing data broker or another company to delete data, not just hide a listing.

Which law applies

  • California: the CCPA gives you the right to delete, to opt out of sale and sharing, and to know what's held. Companies generally have 45 days to respond. Californians can also file one free request to every registered broker through DROP; our DROP checklist helps you prepare.
  • Other US states: a growing number of states, including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas and Oregon, have their own privacy laws with similar rights. Some exempt certain data, such as publicly available records.
  • EU, EEA and UK: the GDPR and UK GDPR give you the right to erasure (Article 17), to object (Article 21) and to access (Article 15), with a one-month deadline.
  • Elsewhere: the letter still works as a clear request, even where no law forces a reply.

This tool writes a request, not legal advice. Laws have exceptions, for example for public records or fraud prevention.

Tips

  • Only include details the company already has. The letter asks them to use your details only for the request.
  • Keep a copy and note the date. If there's no reply after the deadline, send a short follow-up quoting your first request.

Frequently asked questions

Do companies have to respond to a deletion request?

If a privacy law covers you and the company, generally yes: 45 days under the CCPA and most US state laws, and one month under the GDPR. Some data is exempt, such as certain public records.

Should I use the letter or the opt-out form?

Use the company's form first when there is one; it's usually faster. Use the letter when there's no form, the form fails, or you want a written record.

Can I send this for someone else?

Laws allow authorized agents in some cases, but the company can ask for proof. Ask the person to send it themselves where possible.

Is the letter stored anywhere?

No. It is generated in your browser. Nothing is sent until you copy it or open it in your own email app.
